May 2001

I am writing this letter to ask for your most urgent action for saving the life of Mr. Mohammd Reza Pedram, a 55 year old political prisoner held at Evin prison in Tehran, who is reportedly in imminent danger of execution. According to the news, Mr. Pedram was escorted out of his prison cell during the early hours of May 14, 2001, en route to his imminent execution within 48 hours! This disturbing news has been reported by his cell-mates who were crying in sympathy for Mr. Pedram as he was taken out of his cell.

Mr. Pedram, a former air cadet, has been a political prisoner since 5 years ago on the charges of espionage for the United States. Reportedly, he was arrested and imprisoned upon his return to Iran from his residence in the United States. According to his cell-mates, Mr. Pedram has always maintained his innocence while being repeatedly beaten and tortured. In addition, during the past five years, Mr. Pedram spent his time in prison partly by teaching English to other political prisoners.

I strongly urge you to immediately inquire about Mr. Pedram’s condition and whereabouts, as his life may be in grave danger.
