Iran National Front (Abroad): The Release of Political Prisoners, the Security of Lives and the Protection of the Rights of Political Activists Should be Top Priorities of the Government and the Majles.
The wise people of Iran, who are suffocating under the despotic conditions created by a sect of clerics, have in their collective wisdom reelected Mr. Khatami to a second term for presidency. About four years ago, Mr. Khatami and a group of leaders of the Second of Khordad movement, began their rise to power by claiming to respect the rights of ALL Iranians to participate in governing themselves. Later on, however, they advocated to respect the rights of only those who support the Islamic Republic and the rule of the cleric, which gradually descended into making an apartheid-like segregation of the Iranian people into khodi [supporters of the fundamentalist regime] and gheir-khodi [others].
A faction of the leaders of the Second of Khordad movement, has acquiesced to the demand of the hardline totalitarian faction that advocates the segregation of the Iranian people into "khodi" [fundamentalists] and gheir-khodi [others]. This policy promotes a political system in which there are two classes of citizens in Iran; a first class includes "khodi" who enjoy political rights; and a second class includes "gheir-khodi" citizens who do not have any political and civil rights.
From the very beginning, within the Second of Khordad movement, a pro- democracy perspective emerged which found its own spokespersons. This perspective advocated the abolishment of segregation, and advocated legal reforms which would allow the establishment and flourishing of independent democratic associations in civil society, which in turn would make possible a transition to democracy in Iran.
Today, the spokespersons of the pro-democracy perspective are either in prison or have been forced into silence for fear of their lives.
Mr. Khatami and the "reformist" deputies in the Majles owe the millions of votes they received to the support from these pro-democracy activists who are currently in prison. It is incumbent upon Mr. Khatami and the "reformists" in Majles to honor their debt to the pro-democracy movement and demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners, and present their programs and policies in regards to the abolishment of discrimination in political, economic, cultural, social and religious realms.
The Organizations of Iran National Front (Abroad) explicitly demand the freedom of all political prisoners. Obviously, one of the main responsibilities of the government is to maintain an environment, which would safeguard the lives and liberties of political activists. It is regrettable that in the past two years, the number of political prisoners has increased and many have been condemned to execution, torture, and imprisonment merely for expressing their political views.
The following list presents the names of a few of the political prisoners in Iran. We demand the immediate unconditional release of these individuals and all the political prisoners in Iran.
