Court threatens action against female MP

Return to News Page
TEHRAN, Feb 26 (AFP)

Tehran's revolutionary tribunal has threatened to take legal measures against a female MP after her "false remarks" concerning "violence" used during the recent arrest of a female journalist, press reports said Monday.

MP Fatemeh Haqiqat-Joo told parliament Sunday that female journalist Fariba Davoudi-Mohadjer was "arrested in front of her house before her children in a regretful manner" on February 15.

She said armed men "used violence and force" for the arrest of Davoudi-Mohadjer, ripping her "chador" (the long Islamic cloak that covers women from head to toe) off her head and "squeezed her between two doors."

The head of Tehran's revolutionary tribunal, Ali Mobasheri, said Haqiqat-Joo's statement were "false remarks," and that the MP would have to "take responsibility, because the tribunal plans to follow up on the matter," the conservative Resalaat paper reported.

According to Mobasheri, who gave a very different report on the manner of the arrest, Davoudi-Mohadjer has equally "denied Haqiqat-Joo's lies."

"When the police went to Davoudi-Mohadjer's house showing her the arrest warrant, she resisted, and her husband intervened, hitting two officials, one of whom was slightly injured on the hand," the newspaper said.

"The officials did not enter the bedroom of the couple, but two female police members searched the bedroom, during which they seized two guns and some 30,000 pages of documents on Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri," a disgraced Iranian cleric who was once in line to become the nation's supreme leader.

"The entire arrest procedure was filmed," Mobasheri was quoted as saying.

Davoudi-Mohadjer was the third journalist to be arrested in less than a week. Some 15 journalists and a dozen writers and intellectuals who support President Mohammad Khatami have been arrested in the past year by orders of the conservative-led judiciary.

Davoudi-Mohadjer was both a journalist and the public relations officer for Fath and Khordad, dailies whose publication was suspended by the authorities
